INSPECTION

Walk up to the vehicle:

Check for fluid leaks on the ground, such as puddles of oil, coolant, or fuel. Communicate to the tester that you are checking the overall condition of the vehicle.

 

Lights | Reflectors |Reflective Tape:

Ensure they are clean, not missing, cracked or broken. The proper color for their location; RED in the back and AMBER all the way around. Verify that the reflective tape is clean and present. 

Engine Compartment (Engine Off)

  •  No fluids on the ground under the engine and transmission.

  • Oil level is within a safe operating range. The level must be above the refill mark.

  • Automatic transmission fluid level is within a safe operating range.

  • Coolant Reservoir is within a safe operating range which I would check at the reservoir sight glass or I would remove the radiator cap and check the coolant level.

  • Water pump is securely mounted with no loose or missing bolts, not leaking, not bent, broken or cracked. Belts not cracked, excessively worn, torn, cut, cracked frayed, or show signs of loose fibers. No more than 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch of deflection from the center of the belt.

  • Windshield washer fluid is within safe operating range.

  • Alternator securely mounted with no loose or missing bolts, no loose electrical connections, no exposed, broken or burnt wiring. Belts not cracked, excessively worn, torn, cut, cracked frayed, or show signs of loose fibers. No more than 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch of deflection from the center of the belt.

  • Engine hose clamps are tightly connected. Check for leaks and that hoses show no signs of cuts, cracks, bulges, abrasions, worn or rubbing against other parts.

Suspension:
 

  •  Leaf Springs not missing, shifted, bent, cracked, or broken. They are straight. 

  • Mounts/Hangers securely mounted. No loose or missing nuts, bolts, or brackets, not bent, cracked or broken, no missing or damaged bushings. 

  • U-Bolts securely mounted. Not bent, cracked or broken, loose or missing U-bolts. 

  • Shock absorbers securely mounted with no loose or missing nuts/bolts. Not bent, cracked, or dented. Not leaking.

Tires and Rims:
 

  • Tires no cuts, no fabric should show through inside/ outside of the tread/sidewall. 

  • The tread depth is at least 4/32 of an inch, evenly worn and no tread separation. 

  • Valve stems are not cut or cracked. 

  • Check for proper inflation by using a tire gauge per the manufactures specifications. 

  • Rims and flange are no bent, broken or dented. Nothing to impede the bead of the tire. No cracks or illegal welds.

  • No missing claps, spacers or studs

  • Not mismatched, bent or cracked lock rings .

  • Lug nuts not missing, no signs of being loose, such as rust trails or shiny threads to indicate loose lug nuts. Check tightness. 

  • Hub Oil seals not leaking. Oil/grease is at the proper level above the refill mark. I would check at the sight glass/ cap.

 

Brakes:
 

  • Brake lining and drums securely mounted, not broken, cracked, or dented, no signs of oil or grease no loose or missing nuts or bolts. At least 1/4 of an inch thick. 

  • Brake chambers are not broken, cracked, or dented. Are securely mounted, with no loose or missing nuts/bolts or clamps, not leaking. 

  • Slack adjustors pushrod is adjusted to no more than 1 inch when pulled by hand. It is securely mounted and not bent, cracked, broken, no loose, or missing parts. 

  • Brake hoses/lines Check hose couplings or fittings are securely connected and are not leaking. The hoses have no abrasions, bulges, cuts, cracks, chaffed, leaking and not worn, rubbing against other parts.

Driver side
 

"I am checking the Mounts and Hangers, U bolts, Leaf Springs, Shock absorbers, Tire, Rim, Hub Oil Seal, lug nuts, Brake hoses, Slack Adjuster and pushrod, Brake chambers and brake linings and drums the same as I did on the other side except for.”

 

  • (Lights, reflectors and reflective tape on the side of the truck.” Checked as I did in the front.” Tell the tester the color of the lights.) 

  • Power steering pump and reservoir oil is at the proper level above the refill mark which I would check the dipstick. Securely mounted, No loose or missing nuts or bolts, not bent, cracked or broken. Operates properly and is not damaged. It is gear driven. 

  • Air compressor and governor securely mounted with no loose or missing bolts, not broken or cracked or bent. Not leaking. Operates properly and is not damaged. It is gear driven. 

  • Steering box & Hoses securely mounted to the frame, not bent, cracked or dented, not leaking. The hoses have no abrasions, bulges, cuts, cracks, chaffed, leaking and not worn, rubbing against other parts. 

  • Steering linkage is securely mounted with castle nuts and cotter pins. They are not loose or missing. Not bent, cracked or broken. The joints and sockets not excessively worn or loose.  Steering gear box and tie rods are not bent, loose and no broken parts.

All Doors & Mirrors seal are not damaged and opens and closes securely from the outside (demonstrate). Hinges are securely mounted and the seals are intact. Windows are not cracked or broken. Check that mirror brackets are: Not damaged. Securely mounted with no loose or missing parts. Not bent, broken or cracked.

Emergency equipment:

  • Fire extinguisher is securely mounted. Has the proper rating, current inspections and is fully charged.

  • 3 emergency triangles

  • Spare fuses (unless equipped with circuit breakers.)

  • Battery is properly mounted and secure. It is within safe operating range and not leaking.

  • Fuel tank securely mounted with straps, no missing nuts/bolts or mounting parts. Rust check fuel caps are tight, not leaking. Not leaking from fuel tanks or fuel lines.

  • Air & Electrical lines “I would check the Tractor and trailer connections the same.”

    • Not cut, cracked, chaffed or spliced, excessively worn-steel braid should not show through. Not pinched or rubbing against other parts. Not leaking.

    • Connectors for the truck and trailer are sealed and not leaking. The electrical plug and cap are firmly seated and locked in place. Glad hands are locked and not leaking.

  • Deck plate/Catwalk & Steps Solid and securely mounted to the tractor frame with no loose or missing nuts/bolts. Not bent cracked or broken. Clear of loose objects, oil and grease.

  • The Driveshaft securely mounted is not bent, cracked or broken. No loose nuts/bolts or shaft couplings. No debris in the U joints.

  • Frame and Cross Members securely mounted, not bent, broken or cracked. No loose or missing nuts or bolts. No cracks in the cross members.

Fifth wheel

  • Fifth Wheel Mounting plate/ bolts No loose or missing nuts/bolts or parts and securely fastened.

  • Platform base securely mounted not bent, broken or cracked.

  • Fifth wheel skid plate securely mounted. No loose or missing nuts/bolts or pins. Properly lubricated. The fifth wheel is positioned properly so the tractor frame or mud flaps will clear the landing gear during turns.

  • Locking pins of the fifth wheel slide are not loose or missing and are in the locked position.

  • Release arm is in the locked position.

  • Kingpin & Locking jaws check the kingpin is not bent, cracked or broken. The locking jaws are fully closed around the shank of the kingpin.

  • Apron is not bent, cracked, or broken. No gap between the fifth wheel and the trailer.

  • Sliding fifth wheel locking pins No loose or missing pins and in the locked position. Not leaking.

  • Fifth wheel slide cylinder and lines securely mounted. Not bent cracked or broken. Not leaking.

The rear of the tractor “I would check the tires, rims, lug nuts, brake linings and drums, slack adjusters and pushrods, shock absorbers, brake hoses, brake chambers the same as I did on the other side except for.”

 

  • Airbags securely mounted with brackets and not deflated. No abrasions, bulges, cuts, crack, chaffed, leaking and not worn, rubbing against other parts.

  • Torque arm (radius rod/torque spring) and bushings are properly mounted and secure, not bent, cracked or broken, no loose or missing bolts, or mounting parts.

  • Spring and Air Mounts securely mounted no loose cracked, broken or missing frame members.

  • Tires are at least 2/32” in depth.

  • Spacers the rims are touching and the tires are not. The tires have nothing lodged between them. Not bent, cracked or broken. The tire wheels are aligned.

  • Hub AXEL Seal is not leaking and the oil is at a safe operating level which I would check at the differential axel pug.

  • Mud flaps are securely mounted with no loose or missing nuts/bolts. Not damaged, not rubbing on the ground or the tires.

Lights, reflectors and reflective tape on the side of the truck.”

(back of the truck) Checked as I did inthe front.”

Trailer
 

  • Bulkhead and sides of the trailer no holes, cracks or bulges, no missing rivets.

"Lights, reflectors and reflective tape on the side of the truck.” Checked as I did in the front.” (Tell the tester the color of the lights and about the reflective tape.)

 

  • Landing gear is fully raised and securely mounted. Has no loose or missing parts. Not bent broke or cracked. Crank handle is secure. No structural damage.

  • Frame (trailer) not cracked or bent. No loose or missing bolts. No cracks in the cross members or damage to the trailer floor.

Trailer Suspension, “I would check the tires, rims, lug nuts, brake linings and drums, slack adjusters and pushrods, shock absorbers, brake hoses, brake chambers and mud flaps the same as I did on the other side except for.”

  • Tandem release arm/Locking pins are in the locked position. (If present.)

  • Hub Oil Seal is above the refill mark and not leaking.

The rear of the Trailer

"Lights, reflectors, and reflective tape on the side of the truck.” Checked as I did in the front.” (Tell the tester the color of the lights and about the reflective tape.)

  • Tires are evenly matched of the same size.

  • Doors (rear & side) Check truck cargo door(s), hinges, and seals are not damaged, opens and closes and

is securely latched.

  • The license plate is properly mounted and secured. It is present and clean.

  • The cargo lift is not leaking. Has no damaged or missing part and is properly stowed. Explain how the lift is correctly operated.

  • The passenger side of the trailer I would check as I did on the other side except for.

  • The Exhaust system is not loose, broken or missing exhaust pipes, mufflers, tailpipes, or vertical stack. Not leaking.

  • Securely mounted and tightly connected with no loose or missing nuts/bolts, clamps or mounting brackets. No cracks, holes, dents or rust or carbon to indicate leaks. Not rubbing

against other parts.
